Curricular Courses (Workshops, Methods Seminars, etc.)

As this concerns curricular teaching, the planning is carried out by the PhD coordinators within the framework of regular teaching planning. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the PhD coordinator being responsible for your doctoral subject.

Inter-University Doctoral Cooperations (2025–2028)

The Graduate School promotes inter-university doctoral cooperation (national and international). Existing and new doctoral cooperations between a doctoral subject of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of the University of Zurich and another university or a Swiss university of applied sciences or university of teacher education can apply for funding for joint events.

Ten inter-university doctoral cooperations can be funded with CHF 7,500 each per year. The Graduate School's funding is annual. However, in order to allow for multi-year planning of the collaborations, the funding is granted for a period of four years (1 January 2025-31 December 2028). During these four years, the funds must be used and reported on annually. Applications can be submitted for existing and new inter-university doctoral collaborations; follow-up applications are also possible. The call for applications for the next but one term from 2029-2032 will follow in 2026 at the earliest and 2028 at the latest, depending on the budget.

Requirements for application

  • The doctoral cooperation promotes the networking and training of doctoral students at the PhF, the focus of the funding is on curricular teaching.
  • The doctoral cooperation is institutionalised by an agreement between the two partner universities, and both universities commit themselves to the doctoral cooperation and provide resources.
  • The doctoral cooperation is designed with a longer-term perspective of several years.

What can be funded?

  • Teaching positions for joint curricular courses at doctoral level
  • Travel costs of the doctoral students and lecturers involved in the joint courses
  • Catering costs for the joint courses

As a rule, a joint course at doctoral level financed by the Graduate School's funding programme takes place once a year. At least three doctoral students each from PhF and the partner institution take part.

Not eligible for funding:

  • Coordination services
  • Teaching positions for doctoral students
  • Fees and expenses for lecturers and guest lecturers (curricular courses are remunerated via a teaching position)

Application

The application must include the following information:

  • Explanation of the inter-university doctoral cooperation
  • Written confirmation of cooperation from the partner university stating the resources contributed
  • Program of joint courses and activities 2025
  • Budget planning 2025 for the use of PhF graduate school funds and details of how any additional costs will be covered
  • Prospects until 2028
  • Number of potentially participating doctoral students from PhF and the partner university

Application deadline

Applications must be submitted by e-mail to the Graduate School (graduiertenschule@phil.uzh.ch) by 10 September 2024.

Awarding

The Graduate School's Executive Committee will review the applications and decide on the award by mid-October 2024.

Outlook

After the four-year funding period, a further call for applications is planned, in which follow-up applications will be possible. Alternatively, an application for continuation is possible for designated individual cases if the following criteria decided by the Faculty Board are met.

Requirements for continuation:

  • Long-term doctoral cooperation between several universities for a joint curriculum for doctoral students enrolled at different universities
  • Clearly defined research profile
  • Broadly supported by a large number of professorships
  • Minimum number of ten doctoral students on the part of PhF
  • Joint complete curriculum including:
    • Admission procedure
    • Long-term and systematically planned curricular teaching (not just selective courses)
    • Interdisciplinary profile
    • Joint final document or joint degree
  •  Matching funds from the partner university
  • Use of additional resources required by the institute
  • Presentation of a convincing overall budget
  • Desirable:
    • Promotion of international networking
    • Expected national and international impact

Application and review procedure:

  • For the application: Proof of the above requirements; decision by the graduate school and the dean
  • Evaluation after six years as to whether the above criteria are still met

Funding:

  • Long-term financial support for programme activities (teaching assignments, summer schools, etc.) with smaller contributions
  • Annual funding amount for the graduate school: CHF 10,000-20,000
  • Advertising for the collaborations on the Graduate School website
